Rewa Coal Field’s English Medium School was conceptualized in 1962 with six students on its roll. The beginning was extremely humble with no infrastructure. The tutorials play-way method of instructions started in the vacant rooms of General Manager’s Bungalow located at Sohagpur Area, Dhanpuri, District Shahdol, M.P. It was initiated for the welfare of children of employees of coal mines.

Smt. Prabha Krishnan founded the school with the motive to bring English within the reach of common people of the area and incidentally, this school became the first English medium school of the unified district of Anuppur, Shahdol and Umaria. School rose steadfastly with strength rising year after year. With the steadily rising strength, the need for a new building was felt and thus The General Manager of Sohagpur area, Dhanpuri granted permission for construction of a building for running the school. The new building was constructed near Sports Stadium of Dhanpuri. A self recognized governing body constituted of officers and employees of Western Coalfields Limited (Now South Eastern Coalfields Limited) was constituted to look over the activities of school. Due to ongoing mining activities the building came under the surveyed danger zone. Fearing collapse of the building and keeping in mind the lives of small children, again a new building was constructed near the Railway Colony, Dhanpuri.

With the school surpassing the neo-natal and natal stages the entering into juvenility involved appointment of teachers to cater the needs and requirements of increasing classes due to steadily rising strength of students. Thirteen years after its conception the school attained such transitional maturity that the need was felt to give credence to the self recognized governing body. Hence its recognition by its registration was initiated at the office of “Registrar firms and Societies”, Bhopal in the year 1975 and ultimately was recognized by granting registration vide registration number 4377.

To meet the ever growing need to excel and to add facilities in the institution a sustenance grant of Rs. 20,400/- (Rupees twenty thousand four hundred only) per annum from the welfare fund of Western Coalfields Limited (Now South Eastern Coalfields Limited) was granted. This fund was utilized judiciously to pay staff salary and add facilities like furniture, audio-visual instruments, various types of teaching aids like charts, graphs, pictures, models, etc.

Year by year there was enhancement of classes in the school. When the first batch of the school reached class Vth, District Education Authorities at Shahdol, M.P. were pleased to grant permission to run the class and conduct District level board examination for the school students. Consequently Divisional School Education authorities at Rewa, M.P. were also pleased to grant recognition to the school for running classes up to divisional level and conduct board examination for the students of class VIIIth. The school ran as such with flying colors of merit ranks in the district and divisional board examinations.

A major overhaul in the setup of Western Coalfields Limited (now South Eastern Coalfields Limited) took place in 1982, and its approach toward providing educational facilities for the children of officers and employees was modified, mainly due to the transferable nature of their job profiles. Consequently, Western Coalfields Limited (now South Eastern Coalfields Limited) entered into an agreement with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Delhi, to run Kendriya Vidyalayas at various coal mines, thereby facilitating the easy transfer of officers, employees, and their children. As a result, the school was disbanded by Western Coalfields Limited (now South Eastern Coalfields Limited) and subsequently shifted to the Amarkantak Thermal Power Station, Chachai, in 1983. The school was initially run from the Officers’ Club at Chachai while the new building was under construction. The sprawling new building, with a vast campus and playgrounds, was occupied by the school in 1988, and the school continues to function in the same facilities to this day. The school progressed to the high school and higher secondary levels at this location and is now run under the governing body constituted by the officers of the Amarkantak Thermal Power Station, Chachai. Even after its migration from the coalfields area to the power sector, the school retained its status as an excellent co-educational institution. The name of the institution, as well as the name and registration number of the governing society, were retained owing to their historical importance. The school has two buildings, three playgrounds, a plantation ground, parking stand of cycles, motorbikes and a waiting shed for the students and visitors to save themselves from the vagaries of unpleasant weathers. The school has well furnished, well lighted 14 classrooms. There are separate well equipped laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science. The Library of the school is richly supplied with more than 10,000 books on various subjects. There are refresher books and periodicals to help the students in various competitive examinations. For quality education modern teaching techniques using audio-visual equipments like LCD Projectors, Transcope, Epidiascope, Slide Projector, X-ray Illuminator, Transparency projector, binocular research microscopes, Telescope, Camera are utilized. The Office, Finance and Examination sections of the school are fully computerized.

School believes in the principle of offering selfless service to the downtrodden and needy. To stand in the stride with Government Of India to enforce Right To Education for the eligible students, school offers free education to eligible students of the weaker sections. These students are brought in line with the main stream and are provided access free of charges to all the facilities such as library, sports facilities, school literature, identity cards and examination literature etc. as accessible by other students. There is a well managed book bank and these students enjoy the privilege of free access to it.

Currently the school is run under the motivational guidance of Principal, who is an eminent scholar with a background of research approach. He has numerous publications in the field of ethnology and this reflects in inculcating and developing ethnicity in the school aura. School has an enrolled strength of selected 732 students and they are ably catered by a qualified staff of 27 teachers and 12 other operational staff members. The school caters to the students coming from the district headquarters of district Anuppur, residential colonies of various coalmines located at Viveknagar, Amlai, Sanjaynagar, Dhanpuri No. 3, Dhanpuri, Regional Colony, Dhanpuri, residential colonies of Orient Paper Mills (A subsidiary of the Birla group of companies) and Hukumchand Jute Industries Limited (A subsidiary of the Birla group of companies) and the township of Block headquarters – Burhar of District Shahdol.
